“There is more to Internet connectivity than the connection itself” is a mantra used by Remex’s wholly-owned Internet Service Provider, EXL - Internet With A Difference.
We know that an Internet network connection as important as any other network subsystem. We also know that there is significantly greater complexity involved with an Internet network connection because this is the point of interface between (what should be) a secure private LAN and (what is) a completely insecure public network.
The type of Internet connection you choose will most often be driven by a perception of value for money. Many I.T. resellers will recommend a type of Internet connection for your needs and give you several options of appropriate firewall device to secure your private LAN. Many I.T. buyers form the opinion that the purchase and installation of a firewall device is all that is required.
Remex’s advice (whether working with our own ISP or with another ISP of your choice) is a little different. We advise that firewalls are just like any other computing device. They will have hiccups from time to time. They will require patches, updates and security fixes. They will not, unfortunately, function as intended 100% of the time.
Remex advise that, particularly given the critical role they play in the privacy and integrity of your company data, firewalls need regular health checks and maintenance, at least as regularly as any other business-critical computing facility you rely on, and possibly more regularly.
Remex advise that purchasing and installing a firewall device is, in unto itself, not a reliable security mechanism. Simply, if someone is not regularly checking that the device is functioning as intended, well, there may as well be no firewall at all.
